Fur: A lot of chemistry and little nature

We wear furs again. But smooth skin, advertised as a natural product, is packed with dangerous chemicals. The Swiss Agency for Animal Welfare (STS) had raccoon dog fur jackets collars checked for harmful residues. Analysis shows that all samples are exposed to high levels of chemicals.

Switzerland has had a declaration for fur products for two years.

But what no label reveals are the chemicals with which the skins are contaminated. Because on its way to the end-user, the fur goes through a series of tanning, preservation, cleaning, dyeing, and processing processes that also use chemicals that are hazardous to health. healthsunlimited

Bought in Switzerland - tested in Switzerland.

The Swiss animal welfare organization STS wanted to know what chemical toxins imported skins offered in this country are contaminated. The first research of its kind in Switzerland was limited to research on raccoon dog fur. Small pieces of hair, known as ornaments, which are very common today, are mass-manufactured from raccoon dog fur. Hair is cheap, sometimes even more affordable than synthetic fur.

In late fall 2015, STS purchased two children's

jackets and two women's jackets with raccoon fur trim from various suppliers. Three of the skins come from China, one from Finland. The analysis (Oeko-Tex Testex AG carried out contamination test *) in Zurich.

The results

None of the skin samples tested meets all the limit values recommended by Oeko-Tex for products that come into contact with the skin. Formaldehyde, which can cause mucosal irritation and allergies even at low concentrations, was detected in three samples. In the case of a piece of leather (Woolrich brand women's jacket, made in China), the measured value was almost four times the recommended limit value. Healthandbeautytimes

Three skins were also contaminated with surfactants,

a substance that can alter human hormones. Here, the highest measured value (Eddie Pen brand girl's down jacket, made in China) exceeded the Oeko-Tex requirement by 13 times.

Chromium was found in each of the four skin samples. At 40.9 mg/kg, the highest measured value (women's jacket from brand: Attentif, Paris, made in China) exceeded the Oeko-Tex recommendation more than 20 times. themarketingguardian

Animals die for every skin

In addition to the conditions for keeping and slaughtering animals, fur production endangers the environment and workers in production facilities. Also, the finished garment is not safe for the customer's health. Poisonous fur is also often used in children's fashion. Because little ones are so cute with their fluffy hair, parents put their children's well-being at risk. imtechies

The fur is unnatural and with a lot of chemistry. Anyone who refrains from buying natural hair is acting for the welfare of the animals and protecting their health at the same time. techiesguardian
