Starting in the fall semester of 2016, the Lucerne School of Art and Design will offer the new specialization, "XS Jewelry."
After completing their bachelor's degree, students can work
in jewelry, memorabilia, accessories, and the art of living. But you can also
work as jewelry designers, restorers, assemblers, or in the field of
prosthetics or wearable technology.
Anyone who hurts their eyes should wear eye protection. It
is made mainly of cloth and black; it protects the eye but marks its wearer.
Designer Damian O'Sullivan's eye patch is different: made of fine porcelain and
decorated with a finely drawn rose, this unique piece meets all medical
requirements while at the same time playing with definitions and expectations:
when a cache is more than just a solution to a problem? "Yes, it is unique
and beautiful," says Christoph Zellweger, "but above all, it creates
an identity, an adornment that gives the wearer self-confidence. A jewel that
wants to be admired. "

Christoph Zellweger is responsible for studying the new
specialization "XS Schmuck," offered from the fall semester of 2016
at the Lucerne School of Design and Art in the Bachelor of Object Design.
"XS joaillerie" encompasses the creation of jewelry in its entire
range, between design and crafts, between materials and aesthetics, tradition,
fashion, and modernity, between medicine, prosthetics, luxury, and art.
"Our terminology is changing due to new
lifestyles," explains Zellweger. "XS, because more and more information
fits in less and less space." Jewelry designers must react to this too.
"We should not leave the design of Apple watches, Google glasses, and
mobile phone cases only in the hands of the greats."
Students will learn to use traditional craft techniques and
the latest digital tools on an equal footing, work intensively on one-of-a-kind
pieces and series in the workshops, and develop elegant surfaces. Graduates can
assess the market, find niches in it, and design and manufacture unconventional
lifestyle products in addition to typical delicacies.
After graduation: designer, supplier, and more
After completing their studies, jewelry designers have many
options: freelance or salaried designers develop collections and concepts for
companies or brands. They operate in jewelry, lifestyle, and wellness and
understand the needs of the luxury industry. As pioneers, you can help shape
young industries like portable computing or medical technology.
They work as suppliers for the film or tourism industry, as
curators or mediators for galleries or museums. With the continuing education
Master of Arts in Design at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts,
an interdisciplinary research field is opened that connects design, social,
cultural, and health sciences at the interface between material, function, and
content. The new course will also be presented during information days at the
Lucerne University of Applied Sciences.
